LUMINA makes a positive impact on the health of children in Lancaster City by helping to break the cycle of obesity inherent in a life of poverty, where nutritious meals often are missing from a child’s diet. We bring local schools together with nearby churches to form a partnership in providing these important life skills to 4th and 5th graders.
Boys and girls learn basic food safety and good nutrition. They learn to make healthier choices in snacking, and they get to create nutritious foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then they get to eat them together! A simple prayer thanking God for all our blessings is always included, and children with no religious background may discover that a church can be a safe, nurturing space, filled with people who care about children.
Volunteers to assist in the kitchen and help with set up and tear down are always needed. Times for the classes vary. Usually they are held after school one day a week, for four consecutive weeks. For more information, either to volunteer or to host a class, please call 717-394-8412. We have a lot of fun together!
